In May 2012 Ben took part in a BBC Three initiative called Project Hackney along with Leona Lewis and Labrinth. The idea was for each of the musicians to go back to their old school and work with some young people to develop their musical skills and in the end perform at the Hackney Weekender. Ben went back to the Tunmarsh Centre in Plaistow, Newham where he had attended 14 years before. The few weeks he spent there were full of challenges and triumphs, demonstrating to Ben just how powerful music is; in enabling young people to express their inner feelings, both as therapy and to develop talent. The current music room at the school is not very well resourced and since the untimely death of Ben’s old music teacher Cliff, has not been a major part of the school’s programme.
The current music room at the school is not very well resourced and not a major part of the schools programme since the untimely death of Ben’s old music teacher Cliff. At EOTO we are planning to refurbish the room to a high standard and to put into place a full time music teacher in order to allow the young students to get all the benefits of music education back in their lives. We are very grateful to say that Christian Tattersfield and The Warner Music Group have generously agreed to fund this development and we are hoping the space will be open in time for the new school year in September.
